Couch
For movie nights apart

Watch movies together, miles apart.

Counting down "3, 2, 1, play" works for about five minutes. Then someone pauses for the bathroom and you drift apart. Sharing one stream fixes it: one picture, one soundtrack, and both your faces right next to it.

The short answer

How do I watch a movie with someone online at the same time?

Share one stream instead of syncing two. On Couch, one person opens the film in a desktop browser tab and shares that tab with its audio; the other sees and hears it live while you both stay on camera. Pauses and rewinds happen for both of you, so you never drift out of sync.

Steal this plan

A Friday movie night, start to credits

The difference between a call with a film on and a proper movie night is mostly in the edges.

  1. Earlier

    Pick the film by lunch

Swap three options over text and vote. Arrive at 8 knowing what you're watching.

  2. 8:00

    Room, snacks, lights

Open your Movie Date room. Same snack on both sides if you can manage it.

  3. 8:05

    Sound check

Share the tab with sound, play ten seconds, and fix any echo with headphones.

  4. 8:10

    Press play

Phones away. Cameras on, so you catch each other's reactions.

  5. Halfway

    Intermission

Pause for five minutes: refills and theories about the ending.

  6. Credits

    Score it

Both rate it out of ten and keep a running list. A year from now it's your film diary.

How to

How to watch a movie together on Couch

  1. 1

Use a desktop Chromium browser to share

Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera or Arc on a laptop or desktop. The person watching can use any browser, including a phone.

  2. 2

Start a Movie Date or Binge Watch room

Sign in with Google, pick the room, send the link.

  3. 3

    Share the tab with sound

Choose the tab that's playing the film, not your whole screen, and keep share tab audio switched on.

  4. 4

    Watch side by side

Either of you can stop the shared screen at any time. On a phone, turn it sideways for a bigger picture.

Tips that make the difference

  • Share a tab, not your whole screen. It's sharper, carries the sound, and hides your notifications.
  • If the film shows as a black box, turn off graphics acceleration in your browser settings, relaunch, and share again.
  • Plug the sharing laptop into power. Video sharing works the battery hard.
  • A wired connection or sitting close to the router helps the picture stay crisp.

Good to know

  • Sharing a tab needs Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera or Arc on a desktop or laptop.
  • Joining, talking, watching and playing work in any browser, phones included.
  • Rooms hold two people. Anyone new has to knock first.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can I watch Netflix together on Couch?

Couch shares whatever plays in a browser tab, including streaming sites like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube and Max. One person shares the tab with its sound and you watch it together live.

Why is the movie a black screen when I share it?

Some streaming sites hide their video from screen capture while the browser uses hardware acceleration. In Chrome, go to Settings, then System, turn off "Use graphics acceleration when available", relaunch, and share the tab again.

Do we both need to install an extension?

No. Couch runs in the browser with nothing to install. You both sign in with Google and open the same room link.

Will the movie stay in sync?

Yes. Because you watch one shared stream rather than two separate players, pausing, skipping and rewinding happen for both of you at once.

Can I share a movie from my phone?

Not yet. Sharing needs Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera or Arc on a desktop or laptop. Phones and tablets can join and watch.

How many people can watch together?

Couch rooms are for two people. It's built for watching with one person you'd normally share a couch with.
